Pézenas and Molière
Pézenas welcomes from 1647 «the Illustrious Theatre», led by Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, dit Molière, when he was only 25 years old. The latter, accompanied by his friends, amuses the Prince. It is in the chair of the barber Gély, market square in Bled, that he would have built his main pranks.
It was also in Pézenas that he found the inspiration to write Dom Juan or the Feast of Peter. Marcel Pagnol would later say that «if Jean Baptiste Poquelin was born in Paris, Molière was born in Pézenas.»
From this rich history as a «city of Molière», Pézenas has preserved its soul with its city center classified «protected sector» which protects the architectural ensemble from the XVth to the XVIIIth century. In the heart of town, we find the charm of mansions and cobbled streets, close to the atmosphere that Molière and his troupe could know and love during their stays.
